The Newsletter July 2005
Barnsley Accordion Newsletters June 2005 written by chairman Peter Hinchliffe JULY MEETING 2005 Hello All Dear Members, In anticipation of the appearance of Mr Robert Thorn, who is booked to entertain us at our Christmas party meeting, we must arrange a programme for that evening bearing in mind that our club members will want to play Christmas carols as well, and also have time for the buffet. Robert Thorn was on the Yorkshire television Calender show last week, he is preparing to compete in the world accordion championship in Portugal, although his appearance on T.V. was very brief he was allowed to tell us about his interest in the accordion, and how it all started, the co-presenter of the show called the accordion an old fashioned pub instrument, and then invited Robert to play. He played for exactly one minute a portion of the tune I know as the Flying Scotsman, an extremely fast piece to play, the presenters of the show were amazed and fascinated at the performance given by Robert who is just twenty years old, with nine years experience of playing the accordion. Three of our members attended the recent accordion festival held at Pontins Holiday Camp at Blackpool, Jack Emblow and Tony Compton were the star turns, and reports indicate that it was one of the best festivals so far to have been staged at Blackpool. Please make a point of having your Christmas carol music with you at our next meeting, the music prepared and distributed by Douglas Fellows to all accrdion club members, make a note of the carols which you would prefer to play at our Christmas party night, we will prepare a list from the suggestions made at the meeting, and then practise those carols ready for the party night, this way we can ensure that everyone playing is playing in the right key, which wasn’t the case at the last Christmas party as some members played from music which had been written in a different key to our original Barnsley accordion club carol I have just received a copy of Accordion Today in the post, this is a free publication produced by Charlie Watkins of Watkins Electric Music,it is a beautifully illustrated magazine featuring some fantastic accordions and associated products, with plenty of comment from Charlie, it also features a photo of our fellow member John Higham, airborne over the Alps strapped in a hang glider, and playing his accordion. John Kenyon gave a demonstration of the new accordion expander at our last meeting, and I understand that he now plays on a regular basis for a local derby and joan club, well done John and thanks again. Peter Hinchliffe.
