The Newsletter May 2005
Barnsley Accordion Newsletters March 2005 written by chairman Peter Hinchliffe MAY MEETING 2005 Hello All Dear Members, We had 11 members present at our meeting earlier in the month, on the occasion we made special effort to make an early start, someone even arranged the seating in anticipation of our group playing (around the stage),but then decided no, and returned the chairs back to the usual seating arrangement. The group playing session involved the whole group playing the tune “ Play a simple melody ” in four parts, and progress is certainly being achieved under the guidance of our tutor Alex, who is moulding the group with a positive and determined attitude. We had the members play solo for a couple of rounds including our new fellow member Iain Bell who played a medley of Scottish tunes, then went on to demonstrate the method of playing Scottish as it should be played, in order to achieve the authentic sound. Ray Burgon was the winner of the raffle prize, there was a choice of either a bottle of wine or chocolates, Ray decided to take the chocolates, and the bottle of wine will be carried over for the next meeting. I have got to know of a lady who was taught to play the accordion by Horace Crossland, she lives near Walsall, but frequently visits Barnsley, she played in the Barnsley Accordion Band and still plays the accordion, Her name is Elaine Shaw, formerly Taylor, although I have a photo of the band and she is listed in the photo as Heather Taylor. If anyone in our club remembers Elaine, and would like to get in touch I do have her telephone number. Terry has been in touch with Walter Perrie and provisionally booked him to appear as guest artist at our meeting in September, Walter is a professional accordionist who has toured Canada and the USA with the White Heather Show, in the nineties he held office as the President of the Wyre Accordion Club, and is now Vice President of Stockport Accordion Club. Apart from music, he graduated with degrees in physics and nuclear physics. Some of our members, myself and my wife included, attended the recent accordion festival, which was held at The Norbreck Castle Hotel, Blackpool. Well, what a let down, me and my wife returned home early on the evening of the last concert feeling so disappointed, although the accomodation was excellent, and the food was good, the festival concerts arranged for the benefit of the accordion fraternity, were poor and lacking in continuity. We certainly missed the services of an M.C, the event was lacking in all areas as far as entertainment is concerned, and was not as enjoyable as the other festivals that we have attended at Blackpool and Pakefield. We have had another enquiry via our club website, from a person living in the Huddersfield area, who is seeking a teacher of the accordion. I will invite them to the next club meeting. Hope you have been practising the different parts of the piece “Play A Simple Melody”, as the next meeting is on Wednesday evening, 1st June, at 7-30 pm. Best Wishes, Peter Hinchliffe.
