JUNE MEETING 2005

Hello All

We had the company of 12 people at our June meeting, three of our regular members did not attend although ,we did get reasons for the absence of a couple of members. We made an earlier start than usual and  played  our round of solo`s, Maureen  Lyons, whom we have not seen at our meetings for a long time, introduced her friend Les  Yates to the meeting, and together they provided a touch of variety, Les plays the   ukulelebanjo and he accompanied Maureen on accordion playing a selection of  interesting Traditional, Country and Western, and Popular music. Thank you Les and Maureen for your contribution to the evenings entertainment, which was enjoyed by all, and we all look forward to seeing, and hearing you both at our meetings.

Complaints  were raised  at the meeting as to why  Rob Thorne, the accordionist who played at  the festivals at Bridlington and Rhyl, had not yet been booked  to play at one of our meetings as a few of our members had met Rob at the festivals, and had enjoyed his performance on the accordion.  I had a telephone  conversation  with Rob earlier this week, and I have arranged for him to play at our Christmas Party meeting.

He will be bringing  his father, or a friend , who will provide a backing  on the drums during Rob’s performance, similar in style to George Syrett and Rodney. So with two guest artists now booked for meetings this year, we have something to look forward to and keep every one happy at the same time.

Terry the club treasurer, suggests that we have a program and strict timetable for the September meeting, when we have Walt Perrie as guest artist, this would mean that we allocate time slots  around the guests performance to certain members of our club, to entertain us. We will make the arrangements for this  at our next meeting.

Alan  Bunting  brought his  expander to the meeting  and gave us a demonstration, he also sang  as he was playing and he supplied the tempo for our group playing  from the expander,

At  the Blackpool Festival  Harry Hussey was playing the accordion in the concert room bar of the Norbreck Hotel, and he asked for any requests from any of the guests, Alan asked for a tune to be played in a particular key so that he could sing along with Harry, which he did , when Harry and Alan had finished the number , a Scotsman  approached Alan and told him that he had a magnificent voice, and that he ought to take up singing seriously.

This leads me onto the next article, which concerns a  report seen recently in an old magazine, describing the accordion it states that the instrument is usually associated with French Cafes, seafaring folk and musical morris men, the image of the accordion has been played down for centuries. A seemingly modest instrument, it has never been taken quite  seriously by the classical music set. But devoted accordionists have helped to put a stop to such nonsense .by making people sit up and appreciate the instrument for its amazing variety  and quality of sound.

As a result, in the last few years , the accordion has re-emerged as an important contender in the music world with its own repertoire of serious works to bring it into line with its classical cousins. “ It looks very complicated with all its buttons and keys, but actually  a beginner can learn to play a simple tune using both hands  within two or three weeks, which is a great confidence booster. It’s surprising the number of people who don’t believe they will be able to play,  or those who think they need to be able to read music to start, but want to have a go.”

The tenants of The Cock Inn at Birdwell have a room available for groups to meet and have kindly contacted us by email about it.

Next meeting of the Barnsley  Accordion  Club Is next  Wednesday  the 6-July.

Best Wishes,

Peter Hinchliffe.
