The Newsletter July 2004
Barnsley Accordion Newsletters July 2004 written by chairman Peter Hinchliffe JULY MEETING Hello All Dear members We had 15 people in attendance at our last meeting in July, quite a good turnout for the time of year and this number compares very well with the recorded attendances of the numbers of members and guests in attendance at previous meetings during July. Roger Van Loo did indicate prior to the meeting that he would not be able to attend, he also told me of a conversation he had with an accordionist who recently appeared at Wetherby Accordion Club as guest artist, David Price who is available for club night bookings As promised in the June newsletter we watched part of the T.V Video tape by Joey Miskulin at our last meeting, during which he offers to teach the viewer how to play the piece of music San Antonio Rose. Joey is a gifted musician, he can certainly play the accordion, and he plays the piece in three different styles, then he goes on to mention complicated chords which the student should learn in order to perfect the playing of San Antonio Rose, to an accomplished player no problem, but as far as the learners were concerned the lesson was lost from that point on, but at least the exercise created discussion between members and this resulted in many requests for a copy of the tape More Sad Losses to Our Club Sadly I have to report that two of our members have passed away since our last meeting, John Bartnick and Frank Pometlo, died after a long period of illness, our thoughts, and deepest sympathy go to their families and relatives. Both were valued regular supporters of our club and attended many meetings with us. A Strange Belgian Accordion On a recent trip to Belgium, I had the opportunity to see a few Belgian accordions, and I got to meet up with a talented musician who earns a living playing one of these instruments, namely a Fratelli Crosio, but I did not understand the system of tuning on the instruments that I handled, middle C on the bass side of the instrument is situated in the third row of the bass buttons which are set in straight horizontal rows, rather than being set in diagonal rows as on our accordions, also the treble keyboard buttons are played by using four fingers only, and the thumb is placed behind the keyboard where the voice registers are situated, enabling the player to play more quickly Note from Alex Secretary - during my recent weekend playing at the Nostell Priory Show I had a lot of playing to do and did notice a lot of strain when using my thumb on the right hand keyboard for fast crossings over of fingering, so maybe they have the right idea after all. The BBC Tape with Doug Fellowes I have obtained a copy of the audio tape from Radio Sheffield concerning their visit to our club meeting which was organized by Doug, although not complete both Doug and Alex can be heard speaking on the recording and Geoff Wright playing in the background. A Roland DVD of their new digital accordion Roland Ltd have supplied me with a demonstration D.V.D disk for their new digital accordion, the instrument is capable of reproducing extremely good authentic sounds of accordion reeds, together with the sounds of other musical instruments.I am looking forward to Roland Ltd visiting our club meeting in November. The Leyland Accordion Club had a demonstration of the Roland V-Accordion a month ago and apparently one of its members ordered one. See you all at the meeting of our club this Wednesday August 4-04. Best Wishes Peter Hinchliffe. Our Roland Electronic Accordion
Demonstration in November Stockport Accordion Club By the end of the evening, Ken had sold quite a few copies of his debut CD My Accordion Favourites. Ken’s programme was a very satisfying mix of popular evergreen favourites, and his arrangements and delivery impressed even the most discerning of listeners. After many years spent playing the organ in Blackpool, Ken’s first guest appearance in an accordion club has certainly heralded the arrival of ‘a new kid on the block’, to use modern parlance, on the accordion scene, and no doubt many other clubs – and accordion festivals – will be after his services. Ken Astin can be contacted on 01253 751 206, or by e-mail kastin@tiscal.co.uk The SAC Orchestra is booked to appear at Pakefield Festival in September, and both the SAC Band & Orchestra are on the bill at the Sheffield City Variety Concert on October 2nd. On November 26th, both Band & Orchestra play their annual charity concert at the Henbury & Broken Cross Institute in Macclesfield – always a sell-out event. Some big gigs to practice for! The next SAC Club Night is scheduled for Tuesday September 14th, and this will be the President & Vice Presidents’ Evening – when all are cordially invited to come along and play their party pieces. These occasional non-guest evenings usually turn out to be real feasts of accordion playing – and everyone is welcome to join in. Looking a little further ahead, the club has booked London accordionist Romano Viazzani as guest artiste on November 23rd. Another unmissable date for us all! Rob Howard (0161) 480 8858
