Barnsley Accordion Newsletters May2004 written by chairman Peter Hinchliffe

May   MEETING

Hello All

Our May meeting was fairly well attended 13 people being  present and after the usual round of members playing solo we entered into an exercise introduced by Alex, whereby the players were divided into 3 groups, one group took the lead and commenced playing  the  piece  Three Blind Mice , then the other groups followed on playing the same piece ,but on delayed starts ,not as easy as it sounds although very good practise for playing as a group,  we did get it right after three attempts  and caused a certain amount of interest amongst the customers in the games room bar of the Trades Club, at least they knew we were playing Three Blind Mice.

I have been along  to the Pioneer  Store in Barnsley  and seen the accordion duo who are busking there, Rocky, the male partner of the duo played on a regular basis  at Mount Vernon hospital ,although he is blind he plays well, and he told me that  he was an active member of Horace Crosslands  Barnsley Accordion Band during the 50’s and 60’s.

Roland  U.K. Ltd, have sent me a copy of their brochure featuring their new V-Accordion, I made a request to the company for a demonstration  of the instrument at one of our meetings, and the earliest possible date will be on the day of our November meeting, other accordion clubs in this area have not made a request for a demonstration. I will bring the brochure

to our next meeting  so anyone interested will be able to see it. But the V-Accordion is a reedless instrument, the sounds and voices being generated by electronic circuitry, many accordion  enthusiasts will say it is not an accordion, but a portable    electronic keyboard that looks and sounds like an accordion.  However several members of our club are interested in seeing and  hearing  the instrument, so we may as well take up the offer of the demonstration  by  the manufacturer  Roland .U.K .

Accordion   music seems to be very popular on television at the moment, at least five adverts are accompanied by accordions for background music promoting dog food, slimming food, sea food, pasta and cars, this will help to create more  interest  in the  accordion, apart from we who are keen enthusiasts  and  appreciate  hearing the  sound  of our favourite instrument.

Concert  Night  For  Barnsley  Accordion  Club.  Bill  Chochran  will  be  the  guest  artist  at  our   meeting  on Wednesday  Second  of  June.

Bill  is  a  talented  musician  and  plays  both  button  and  piano  key  accordions,  and  our  fellow   member  ( Russ )  Alan  Bunting  will  be  singing  along  with  Bill,  so  we  will  have  an  evening of  good  entertainment,  please  bring  your  wives, friends  or  anyone  wanting  a  good  night.

                                                                                                                   Best  Wishes. Pete Hinchliffe
