Our Chairman Peter HinchliffeChristmas Edition Letter

Dear Members and Friends, Beginners, Experts or Listeners,

31 people attended our December Christmas party meeting, although 6 of our members did not attend for various reasons, we had a good time.

Our old friend HARRY HUSSEY was our guest artiste for the evening and once again gave us a brilliant performance on his Borsini accordion. Thanks Harry from all your fans at Barnsley Accordion Club.

Our most junior member of the club, Thomas was present at the meeting and he is now the tallest member of the club, he has certainly grown up during the past year and is making a fine young man.

We started off the evening with the usual round of members playing solo followed by an interesting game introduced by Ray which involved members checking certain items on display on a table, identifying and remembering as much as possible about the items before Ray asked a number of questions. The game was won by Janet and Ian.

Then it was Harry`s turn to entertain us, requests from the audience for music were plentiful and he didn`t let anyone down. How he manages to remember all those tunes and plays them without a wrong note is amazing.

Harry completed his first session the we had a break for the buffet which was provided by the steward and stewardess of the Trades Club and they laid on an appropriate feast of food which everyone enjoyed. Once again thanks to them both.

After the break Harry continued playing for a while until it was decided to attempt our group playing of Xmas carols. In the pst Alex would play the introduction for each carol then the group would join in playing through to the end of the carol. We have a programme of carols prepared by our dear departed Dougie practised and rehearsed by our members, but for some reason Ray brought along and distributed some new ones for us. Although he has brought many useful arrangements in for us to try in the past this time our efforts were a complete disaster. However the rest of the evening was a great success.

During the evening a very old friend of mine called into the trades club mentioning that he liked to hear music on the accordion, remembering from his youth accordion players sitting outside their homes n the street through the summer months and playing.

The street is situated behind the Trades club as it happens and he told me the names of five people who were active accordionists, but as far as we know they have never been to our accordion club meetings.

Best wishes

Peter

January 2004 Newsletter

Our January meeting was attended by twelve people, but this included three new faces who attended for the first time. We welcome Mr. John Higham, from Cheshire as a new member of Barnsley Acccordion Club, he is also a member of Stockport Accordion Club.n He has a new Brandoni accordion, a lovely instrument with a sweet and mellow tone, and it really does sound as good as it looks.

Alex missed the meeting but he thinks he will be at our next meeting and has put up the photos taken by Shelagh at our Xmas party on the website (see links above) and we thank them both for spending the time getting the job done so soon after Christmas.

We starter our January meeting with members present playing solo, our new member John played a piece and sang at the same time, so watch out Alan!

Since the meeting I have received correspondence from Ray Burgon suggesting that we lay out a time-table for meetings and adhere to it and also that each member when playing solo plays only one piece of music at a time, no medleys.

If we did this I personally think meetings would become too regimented, but it is up to Ray to raise this next meeting so we can put it to the vote. Another issue we must sort out, as I have mentioned prviously is that we are not able to sit down and play a piece of music together. We do have some music so let us decide what we are going to rehearse,

Hope to see you all at the next meeting which will be on Wednesday 4th February 2004 at 7.30pm at the Trades Club.

Best wishes

Peter Hinchliffe
