The Newsletter April 2005
Barnsley Accordion Newsletters March 2005 written by chairman Peter Hinchliffe APRIL MEETING 2005 Hello All NewsletterApril 2005 Dear Members, Our meeting this month was the busiest one so far this year with 15 people in attendance, and we had 11 accordions all active playing in our group. Iain Bell from Harrogate came to the meeting and joined our club, and he brought his new Piermaria accordion and played some Scottish music for us which caused a lot of interest, because we don’t hear much of that type of music being played at our meetings since Geoff Wright left. We also had the company of Rocky and Derek, who are a very well known accordion duo in the Barnsley area, and they have done a lot of work for various charities, they also played some very sweet duets for us. We had a late start to the meeting most of the players did a couple of solo’s, John Higham and Alan Bunting each sang a song which made the solo session most entertaining. John also confirmed the fact that he had played his accordion during a - hang-gliding descent from the top of a mountain in Switzerland, this is also mentioned in Rob Howards book "The A to Z of the Accordion", accompanied with a photo of the event. The raffle prize which was an audio tape of Café de Paris accordion music played by the great Jack Emblow, was won by our fellow member Chris Collins. We eventually got round to our session of group playing, Alex having arranged the chairs to his liking around the foot of the stage, we then set up our music stands in the position according to the part we were about to play, then Alex directed us through the tune of "Play a simple melody" in four parts, we achieved some improvement in our standard of playing during the session, although as I have already mentioned we had more instruments playing, we only spent a short period of time playing but Alex was pleased with our efforts, and all the players involved in the session enjoyed it too. Stuart and I paid a visit to Geoff Holters of Darlington earlier this month, we saw the new range of medium priced Italian accordions which Geoff has in stock, I had the opportunity to play one and I was immediately impressed by the quality of sound and response of the instrument. Geoff said that he would like to have a trade stand at one of our meetings, and promote this particular brand of accordion. I received an enquiry last week from a professional guitarist Robert Anthony, who is seeking the services of a solo accordionist, and a pianist to play at an event which he is organising in September, at Bullhouse Chapel, Penistone. Our fellow member Ray Burgon also got in touch with me last week to explain why he missed the last meeting, he was sorry but he forgot. Now that the weather is improving we really must book someone for additional entertainment at one of our future meetings, suggestions will be welcome from members at our next meeting which will be on Wednesday 4-May-2005.at the usual venue The Trades Club, Racecommon Rd, Barnsley. Please continue to practise your parts for the group playing, hope to see you all at the meeting. Best Wishes Peter Hinchliffe.
