Barnsley Accordion Club Even if you just like the sound of the Accordion and want to sit and listen we shall be delighted to meet you. All are welcome. The club formerly met at about 8pm on the first Wednesday of each month at Barnsley Trades and Labour Club, Racecommon Road, Barnsley, South Yorkshire From October 2003 however it will be on the First Tuesday of the month so that we will continue to retain the best facilities for our meetings at the Trades Club. |

John Kenyon is well known for his jewellers stall at Barnsley Market which he had for many years before he retired. He is expert in accordions and accordion playing and repair also, and he would sometimes regale customers with his accordion playing in the market hall. It was probably John who was the prime instigator for the club. He often would call into Wersi Organs in the centre of Barnsley near the market hall and say to Alex Govier the manager "When are we going to have our own accordion club here?" Barnsley Accordion Club was eventually started by them with Douglas Fellowes, an accredited accordion teacher who has been Barnsley area secretary for the Musicians Union for many years. Alex and Douglas had previously gone to Sheffield Accordion Club, which still has members in common with Barnsley and a friendly relationship, but now they had to concentrate their efforts on the new club. Douglas Fellowes is the chairman of the club, John Kenyon is a committee member and Alex Govier (now moved out of Barnsley business-wise in favour of a different format music shop, The Music Box in Meadowhall Sheffield) is the secretary and organiser of this website. |
